Template:GBmap-named Carterton is a town in Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom. It is one of the newest towns in Oxfordshire. Despite this, Carterton is the second largest settlement in the west of Oxfordshire. Its population is approximately 14,000.
Carterton is located about 6 kilometres south west of Witney and close to the A40.
Until the early 19th century, the area of Carterton was farmland. It belonged to the parish of Black Bourton. The land was then sold to Wiliam Carter, the director of a building company.
The town grew rapidly during wartime. This growth was linked to the proximity of Carterton to the base at RAF Brize Norton. The base is still one of the main employers on the area. The link to the air base also means that the population of Carterton is constantly fluctuating. There is also a significant proportion of retired RAF personnel living in the town.
Carterton continues to grow and is currently creating large estates of mixed and social letting housing on the outskirts of the town.
