Carrizozo Malpais
|
The Carrizozo Malpais is a large lava flow near Carrizozo, New Mexico. This geographic feature can be viewed by car or by rail, as a New Mexico highway and a railroad line pass by the Malpais. The flow is black in color; those who are heading south will then also view the White Sands National Monument. The large Mescalero Apache Reservation, in the forested Sacramento Mountains is east of the Malpais. This forested area (the Lincoln National Forest) also contains Sierra Blanca, a 12,000 foot peak, a ski resort run by the Mescalero Apache tribe.
