Caronia
|
Caronia is a town in the province of Messina, Sicily (Italy) where during the months of January and beginning of February 2004, household appliances and electricity meters unexplainably caught alight causing fire hazards.
About 10 electricity meters caught alight and the electricity company (ENEL) experts could not find an immediate explanation for the happenings. Several other appliances, such as TV's, and other household items suddenly started burning. A mattress, allegedly, also caught alight probably caused by the overheating of the metal support of the bed.
The electromagnetic readings in the city where abnormally high and some people speculated that the phenomena was somehow linked to the railway track in the vicinity.
The Italian National Research Council (CNR) attributed the happening to a geothermal phenomena according to which a breaking in the underground stratified layers cause an increase in porosity of the earth thus releasing a great amount of electrostatic energy. The freed electrons would then accumulate on pointy (metallic) surfaces, well known to the electro technical theory causing high potential difference between surfaces and thus creating ideal conditions for electrostatic discharges which is suffice in strength, would cause the fires.
Mysterious happenings, however, continued to manifest two months later. Several car alarms would unexplainably activate themselves without anyone actually pushing the remote control button, mobile phones would ring without any incoming call and in one case, mysterious characters appeared on the screen.
Investigators are reassuring the citizens that everything possible is being done to find an explanation for the happenings but theories of demonic intervention prevail.
