Capitol

Capitol is the name generally given to the building in which the executive and/or legislative branches of government are housed. The term is most often used by republics. The city or town in which a capitol building resides is called the capital of the entity which that particular government has jurisdiction. For example, the United States Capitol houses the United States Congress. The City of Washington in which it resides is the capital of the United States. Likewise, the Hawaii State Capitol houses the Governor of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Legislature. The City of Honolulu in which it resides is the capital of Hawaii. The term capitol comes from the Latin Capitolinus Mons in Ancient Rome. It was the seat of the Roman Republic. Sometimes, the capitol building is called a statehouse.
