Burgon Society

The Burgon Society was founded in 2000 for the study and promotion of academical dress, to preserve its history, and to advise film and television companies and interested others in the correct usage of academical dress.
The society is named after the man known as Dean Burgon, John William Burgon (1813-1888). He is the only person to have an academic hood named after him, the Burgon hood.

Membership is open to all who support the aims of the society. Fellowship may be awarded to members upon supplication after submission of substantial work on the study of academical dress.
