Bucky Katt
|
Bucky Katt is a fictional character in the Darby Conley's comic strip Get Fuzzy. He is an anthropomorphic Siamese cat who shares an apartment with Satchel Pooch and their owner, Rob Wilco.
Bucky is selfish, cynical, egotistical and lazy, and probably the least likable of the strip's characters. He is, nevertheless, capable of the occasional sympathetic act. Bucky's personality is best illustrated by the fact that his ears are nearly always laid back flat on his head in a defiant, aggressive manner. (They only appear in the "normal" upright position when Bucky is surprised, or very rarely in a show of friendliness.) Instead of a full room (as Satchel has), Bucky is confined to a closet.
The name Bucky has somewhat of a dual origin: he has only one upper cuspid; sports fanatic Rob has mentioned, however, that he named him after legendary baseball player Buck O'Neil. An alternate theory is that Bucky is named after late 1970s New York Yankees outfielder Bucky Dent who hit a game winning home run against the Boston Red Sox in a tie breaking playoff game to determine the American League Eastern Division champion in 1978. This would make sense, since Bucky is Rob's constant foil.
Bucky is portrayed as every cat-hater's nightmare: antisocial and delighting in random destructive acts of violence. Only a foot or so tall, he allows his belligerent attitude to compensate for his non-threatening stature. He is somewhat slow-witted in many regards but has displayed amazingly in-depth knowledge of certain areas of interest, such as birds. He has also been shown to be an idiot savant, fixing Satchel's watch with no knowledge how to whatsoever.
Two obsessions dominate Bucky's life: trying to best Fungo Squiggly the ferret, and the desire to eat a monkey (even trying to travel to Anaheim to eat the Rally Monkey). Neither of these goals has much rationale behind it, and he has had the same lack of success in each. Fungo routinely and easily defeats Bucky's schemes (the first ended up with Fungo in posession of one of Bucky's teeth, which he has turned into a necklace), and the only encounter with a monkey resulted in the chimp trying to peel Bucky like a banana. Bucky may consider this goal complete after obtaining Ben and Jerry's "Chunky Monkey" ice cream, since he thinks the flavor comes from real monkeys.
Bucky claims to be a fan of the "Yankers", primarily to antagonize Rob, an ardent Red Sox fan. He taunts Rob when the Red Sox play poorly, but his lack of knowledge about baseball usually causes his insults to fall flat. Bucky was briefly forced to wear a pair of red socks after losing a bet with Rob. (Bucky took vengeance by slashing Rob and pulling his knit cap over his face.)
In another apparent display of contrariness, Bucky offsets Satchel's Hufflepuff poster with his own Slytherin poster, although he doesn't seem to outwardly care for the Harry Potter books, he is shown to be a big fan.
Bucky often refers to Rob disdainfully as "Pinky," referring to Rob's shameful (in Bucky's opinion) lack of fur. At other times he calls him "Robert", rarely using the name "Rob".
Very little has been revealed about Bucky's birth and early life. Rob once mentioned that he found Bucky huddled on a trash can when only a few weeks old in Hackensack, New Jersey, and while Bucky's father has never been mentioned, Bucky gave his mother's maiden name on a credit card application as "Tricky Woo".
