Bradley Method
|
The Bradley Method® of childbirth emphasizes educating parents-to-be about the birth process, thereby enabling them to feel in control and to achieve the safe birth experience they desire.
The method was created by Dr. Robert A. Bradley (1917-1998) and popularized by his book Husband-Coached Childbirth.
The official website (http://www.bradleybirth.com/) discusses the goals taught by Bradley classes, including some of the following: natural childbirth, nutrition, husband-as-coach, relaxation and breastfeeding. Classes are taught by a network of trained teachers, usually in 12 weekly meetings in the months leading up to mom's due date.
The goal is to minimize medical interventions, based on the idea that one intervention can trigger another required intervention. For example, narcotics provided as pain killers to the mother can reduce her muscle control. With worse muscle control, the mother may not push as effectively and surgery like an episiotomy or a caesarian section may be required.
