Bomberman is a puzzle-like maze-based computer game franchise developed by Hudson Soft. The goal is to complete the levels by stragetically placing bombs throughout them to defeat enemies and blast a path through obstacles.
The original Bomberman featured only this single-player mode, but most of the subsequent games in the series include both single-player and multiplayer modes, the goal of the latter being to eliminate all other players. Multiplayer games tend to be more fast-paced than the single-player game, as each player frantically places bombs in hopes of catching an opponent in the blast.
Although most games in the Bomberman series use the same puzzle-like maze-based levels established by the original game, some are Zelda-like adventure games, Mario-like platformers, Tetris-like puzzle games, and kart racers.
Versions of Bomberman released by Ubisoft for home computer systems were re-titled Dynablaster.
The game was ultimately a reworking of Hudson Soft's earlier title Eric and the Floaters, released in 1984 for the home computer market.

Powerups
The Bomberman games usually include many powerups that are found beneath destructible blocks. These include:
- Flame - Increases the blast range of Bomberman's bombs.
- Golden Flame Maximises the blast range of Bomberman's bombs.
- Bomb - Bomberman can drop more bombs at once without having to wait for one to detonate.
- Egg - Contain different animals which Bomberman can ride on, different games have different animals each with unique skills.
- Skull - Infects Bomberman with a random disease, with effects ranging from being unable to drop bombs, swapping player positions, can't stop dropping bombs, slow speed, can't stop running, a temporarily inverted control scheme, or randomly killing him. Skulls act differently on different Bomberman games, on super bomberman the skull disease can be passed to another player by touching them and is lost when collecting a powerup, on saturn bomberman the disease is spread to whoever the player touches and lasts a limited amount of time.
- Combine/Merger (Found only in Saturn Bomberman) - Allows Bomberman to merge with any player he touches, causing him to grow slightly and gaining any powerups that player had, if all but 2 players are left and the player with merger touches the final player, the merger is canceled causing all merged players to be released, while the powerup is in effect the player flashes red, lasts a limited amount of time, 2 players with the merger powerup cannot merge.
- Detonator/Remote Control - Allows Bomberman to explode a bomb at will.
- Spike Bomb - Bombs can "penetrate" walls (blow up several walls in a row).
- Jelly Bomb - Bombs can bounce back when kicked and can bounce randomly around when thrown.
- Power Bomb - Allows Bomberman to drop one maximum flame bomb, all after are normal bombs until the Power Bomb explodes.
- Bead Bomb (Found only in Saturn Bomberman?) - Allows Bomberman to "charge up" the bomb he is standing on, causing him to flash yellow, then is able to move with the bomb, upon letting go of the button, the bomb is fired off at high speed in the direction he is facing then explodes on impact.
- Line Bomb - Allows Bomberman to drop all of his bombs in a row infront of himself.
- Mine - Can be dropped like a bomb, however becomes invisible within a few seconds, becomes visible and detonates a few seconds after being touched by a player, only the 1st bomb dropped is a mine, all bombs afterwards are normal, until the mine explodes.
- Skates - Increases Bomberman's walking speed.
- Clog/Sandals - Decreases Bomberman's walking speed.
- Block/Wall Pass - Allows Bomberman to walk over destructable walls.
- Bomb Pass - Allows Bomberman to walk over bombs, cancels out Bomb Kick.
- Boot/Bomb Kick - Allows Bomberman to kick dropped bombs out of the way, cancels out Bomb Pass.
- Mitts/Power Glove - Bomberman can pick up and throw bombs over walls.
- Boxing Glove - Bomberman can punch bombs that are infront of himself over walls.
- Fire Suit/FlameProof Jacket - Causes Bomberman to be invincible for 10 seconds.
- Ebola (Found only in Atomic Bomberman) - Infects the player with up to 3 diseases.
- Evil (Found only in Bomberman 64) - Initiates a stage-wide hazard, like a firestorm or an evil disco light that eventually kills everybody.
- Devil (Found only in Saturn Bomberman) - Inflicts all players with a random disease, including the player who picked up the powerup, a bat is displayed over the player who collected the powerup, lasts a limited amount of time.
