Basionym

A basionym is the first name published for a biological taxon (species, genus, etc.). It remains the defining name for the taxon even when the taxon has been transferred to a new combination.
For instance the Norway Spruce was first published by Carolus Linnaeus as Pinus abies L.; this is the basionym. The species was later shown to be distinct from other species in the genus Pinus, and was transferred by the botanist Gustav Karl Wilhelm Hermann Karsten to the genus Picea as Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.
When a biologist proposes any change in the name or status of a taxon, for the change to be published validly, the basionym must be fully stated in order to show exactly which taxon is being referred to.
