Banten is one of the provinces of Indonesia and located at the western end of the island of Java.
Banten is one of the most recent provinces to be created as part of the Indonesian reformation era. Before October 17, 2000, Banten was a part of West Java province.
Banten has an area of 8,651.2 kmē. It is subdivided into four regencies (kabupaten) and two administrative towns. The regencies are Serang, Pandeglang, Lebak, and Tangerang. The two towns are Cilegon and Tangerang. The population of the province is 8,052,312 (2000 census).
History
From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, Banten was an independent sultanate. Ruling sultans included:
