BARV
|
The BARV is a British military support vehicle, the name coming from 'Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle'.
This is a waterproofed armoured vehicle based on a tank but with high sides to allow wading in water nearly 3 metres deep. It is used by the Royal Marines during amphibious operations to recover stuck or drowned vehicles on beaches or in the surf to prevent them becoming obstacles. BARVs are also used to free stuck landing craft and other tasks necessary to keep the beach area running smoothly.
The current version is based on the Centurion main battle tank. This replaced previous versions in the 1960s which was based on the Sherman tank.
