Azcapotzalco

Azcapotzalco is one of the 16 delegaciones (boroughs) into which Mexico's Federal District is divided.


It is located in the northwest of the Mexico City.

The word Azcapotzalco significate "Place of Ants" provided of the prehispanic epoch.

A Brief (and Disjointed) History

Prehispanic Period

Azcapotzalco was a territory of Tenochtitlan, where lived people of work in the handicraft, jewels of Emperor Moctezuma.

Colonial Epoch

In 1519, when Hernan Cortes arrived for the first time in Tenochtitlan, Moctezuma show off jewels was made in Azcapotzalco.

300 years of hispanic colonization

In this time, the Spanish changes many of the old suburbs with the Cristians names and in this time start the build of the architecture hispanic in Azcapotzalco we can named the "Church of Azcapotzalco (now named Iglesia de los Santos Apostoles Felipe y Santiago)" and the "chapel of the Virgin of Rosario, into the Church of Azcapotzalco" this building is unique because in Mexico only exists 3 in all the country.

The Porfirian Epoch

In 1910-1920, the Mexico City lived a glamourus epoch by the law and order of the President Porfirio Diaz, the most suburbs mention in this time as American Suburb (now Zona Rosa), Centro Suburb (now Historic Centre), "the Chapultepec Zone when lived the high society of the city and near of the Castle of Chapultepec", Roma Suburb (now Colonia Roma) and Azcapotzalco in this time lived a glamourus epoch, On Azcapotzalco Avenue, the high society to install elegant houses with French architecture and the Azcapotzalco Avenue was a completely European street (Now yet exist a vestige of this epoch on Azcapotzalco Avenue), Sometimes, the President Porfirio Diaz, visit this Suburb because he said " Azcapotzalco is the place where I have a still day" in this epoch Azcapotzalco was named "Azcapotzalco of Porfirio Diaz"

Second Middle of Century XX

Azcapotzalco suffer big changes because in the zone of "Refineria" PEMEX, (Mexican Petroleums) install a refinery and Azcapotzalco transformed in a Middle Class zone
