Austrian Empire
|
The Austrian Empire was founded in 1804 as a reaction to the creation of the First French Empire under Napoleon I. The first Emperor of Austria was Francis I, at this time holding also the title of a Holy Roman Emperor, which he abdicated when the Empire was abolished in Napoleon's reorganisation of Germany in 1806. In the process of keeping his imperial title, he raised Austria from an Archduchy to an Empire.
After failed attempts at constitutional reform, the Austrian Empire was transformed into the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867 under Franz Joseph I, granting equal status to the Hungarian territories.
