Australian Embassy, Tokyo

Australian Embassy, Tokyo

The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is located in the Mita district of Tokyo. The 13,000 m² site was once part of a larger property owned by the Hachisuka clan, an aristocratic family which originated in the Chubu region of Japan (near modern day Nagoya) but rose to prominence in Tokushima, Shikoku, under the patronage of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The original buildings were built by Marquis Hasauji Hachisuka in 1924 after the original residence was destroyed by fire following the Great Kanto earthquake. The Marquis Hachisuka had been educated at Cambridge University and decided to build a western style residence that reminded him of his time in England. The land and residence was purchased by the Australian Government in 1952.

The old residence was demolished in 1988 as part of the re-development of the site, and the new Embassy and Ambassador's Residence were completed in 1990. The new building (see photo) was designed by Denton, Corker and Marshall Pty Ltd of Melbourne, Australia.
