Asp is an archaic term for a number of species of poisonous snake that live in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. The Egyptian cobra is the animal most often referred to by this name, but a wide array of other snakes were called asps. Today the asp viper Vipera aspis is the only snake correctly referred to as an asp. The asp was regarded as a sacred animal in Ancient Egypt and was a symbol of Egyptian royalty. Cleopatra is famously said to have killed herself by holding an asp to her breast. Both the Greeks and Romans used the bite of an asp as a tool of execution.

Asp Rocket
Asp is the designation of an American sounding rocket. Between 1955 and 1962 these were used 30 times to study the explosion clouds of nuclear bombs. The Asp (http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/asp.htm) has a pay load ability of 11 kg, a maximum flight height of 110 km, a takeoff thrust of 42.00 kN, a mass of 111 kg, a diameter of 0.17 m, a length of 3.68 m and a fin span of 0.51 m. After 1962 the Asp rocket was used in connection with other sounding rockets.
