Arturo Umberto Illia Francesconi (Pergamino, August 4 1900 - Córdoba, January 18 1983) was President of Argentina from 12 October 1963 to 28 June 1966. A member of the Radical Civic Union, he was a committed anti-Peronist.
From 1940 to 1943 he was vice governor of the province of Córdoba and in 1948 was elected to the National Assembly. In 1962 he was elected as governor of Córdoba, only to have the election result anulled. In 1963 he was selected as the Radical Party's candidate in the Presidential Elections and he defeated Oscar Alende to become President through the Electoral College.
During his presidency he had to face mounting opposition from the Peronist CGT national trade union center, disagreements with the United States over the cancellation of oil production contracts and a drought which affected beef production.
In 1966 his government was overthrown by the military.
