Antipope Celestine
|
Antipope Celestine born Teobaldo Boccapecci or Boccapeconai was an antipope from December 15-December 16, 1124 to 1125/1126).
He was made a Cardinal deacon by Paschal II. He was selected as pope in a confused and chaotic election, in which Teobald and another Cardinal, Saxo, were supported by the Pierleori family. During the process of Celestine's investment, Robert Frangipani and a body of troops broke into the church and proclaimed Lamberto Cardinal Scannaberchi (a man of considerable learning), of Ostia as Pope.
On Celestine's resignation Scannaberchi became Honorius II.
