Amr Moussa (Arabic: عمرو موسى, (born 1936) is an Egyptian diplomat and the current Arab League secretary-general, appointed in May 2001.
Previously, he served as Egypt's ambassador to India in 1967, its ambassador to the United Nations in 1990, and as its foreign minister from 1991 to 2001.
Amr Moussa is by far the most popular Egyptian diplomat and there have been numerous calls by Egyptians asking him to run for Presidential elections. Moussa was a very outspoken diplomat and he was well known for his sharp criticism to US bias towards Israel especially after Israeli massacres in Southern Lebanon. It is said that he was essentially moved to the Arab League to remove him from the spotlight as he was becoming a strong contender to President Mubarak of Egypt and the US wanted him silenced.
In 2004, there has been an online community that gathered tens of thousands of signatures petitioning for Amr Moussa to run in the 2005 elections, but there has not been any response on his behalf.
