Al Anbar
|
Al Anbar is a province in the nation of Iraq. Its capital is Ar Ramadi. Anbar is the largest province in Iraq, sharing a border with Syria, Jordan (undefined), and Saudi Arabia. Its name is Persian (انبار Anbâr) and means "the warehouse". This region was the warehouse of the Persian Sassanid troops. The province also contains the city of Fallujah and comprises a large portion of the so-called Sunni triangle. The Iraqi insurgency is widely considered to be stronger in this province than in any other in Iraq, and to this day, US forces still struggle to gain control of the region where hostility towards occupation forces has been especially fierce. Anbar, with Ramadi and Fallujah in particular, is known for its inhabitants' strong tribal and religious traditions, with even the regime of former President Saddam Hussein wary of the volatile nature of the area.
