Academic Kids:WikiProject Maps

First, an important note for everyone to remember:

A few Wikipedians have come together, to make some suggestions about how we might standardize the process of creating geographical maps. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you are thinking of creating map graphics and aren't sure about the most appropriate style, color, or labelling to use, you may find these suggestions to be helpful. An index of maps is under development at the Map index.

Title

WikiProject Maps

Scope

This WikiProject is designed to enhance the presence of geographical maps on Wikipedia, as well as to provide a set of guidelines and standards for creating and modifying such maps.

As of this writing, maps in Wikipedia are designed with inconsistent color schemes, styles, and labelling; this project aims to unify the process of map-making. The project may also be used as a resource for Wikipedians who are interested in creating and modifying maps, but are unsure about how to do so.

Finally, this project might also serve as a central location for listing requested maps and orphaned maps. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps.

Map Colors

The consistency of maps within Wikipedia would be greatly improved with adherence to a specific palette of colors. As of this writing, no standard set of colors has been agreed upon; the standard color palette is currently being discussed on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps, so please feel free to register your opinions and suggestions there.

Map Style

Appropriate map style is currently under discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps. Please join in the conversation there.

File Format

PNG is perhaps the most appropriate image format to use for geographical maps, due to its efficiency in representing graphics with relatively few colors. The SVG vector-based format is gaining popularity on the web, but many browsers today cannot display SVG natively, so if you create maps in SVG format, please convert them to PNG prior to including them in an article. If possible, upload the SVG file to Wikipedia as well, since it is well-suited to further modification by others.

Image formats such as JPEG that use lossy data compression, are generally not as good for images that have sharp lines and text in them. The compression process used for these formats tends to make lines and text appear "fuzzy," even if they were sharp when originally created.

Links from geographical coordinates to maps

A mechanism to link geographical coordinates to maps is now being established, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates. Maps made in this project that are suitable for inclusion in this scheme should be made available for navigation.
