Academic Kids:Votes for deletion/Copacetic

Another dicdef. Move to Wiktionary. Guanaco 01:54, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)

  • Delete: The etymology looks pretty sketchy to me, but whether or not it is, I think Wiktionary should develop this one according to its own standards, esp. since this is a Jazz Age term and a jazz music term. Geogre 03:46, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Like, man, this article is a real drag. a) dicdef, b) what's there is unverifiable and unreferenced. AHD4 (http://www.bartleby.com/61/65/C0626500.html) lists it as a standard word (saying nothing about a jazz connection, BTW):
SYLLABICATION: co·pa·cet·ic; VARIANT FORMS: co·pa·set·ic; Very satisfactory or acceptable; fine: “You had to be a good judge of what a man was like, and the English was copacetic” (John O'Hara). ETYMOLOGY: Origin unknown.

    • Comment: "Etymology obscure" in every source I've examined. First usage 1919. At the same time, look at the quote selection (John O'Hara). What I'm saying is that it's a jazz-community-derived term popular in the 1950's as a hepcat slang. First use in print is already among the hipsters. Best argument I've heard is that it derives ultimately from the "jazzing" musicians of New Orleans, but it's obscure. What it ain't is appropriate for us, as you note. Geogre 14:22, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • A better article already exists at Wiktionary:Copacetic. Delete this one. --Ardonik 08:36, Jul 31, 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete, definatly something you may find in a dictinary but not an encyclopedia. But wicktionary already has a good article on it. And shouldn't wikipedia have a wikipedia:votes to move to wicktionary or something?--Ryan B. (Talk, contributions) 09:16, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
