Biography
Abaye, ("little father") the name of a Babylonian 'amora (q.v.), born in the middle of the 3rd century. He was an orphan, and was raised by his uncle, Rabbah bar Nachmani, and his wife. Abaye assumed the position of Head of the Yeshiva of Pumbeditha shortly after the retirement of his uncle. He died in 339.
