Georgian Airways was formed in November 1999 as the result of the merger of two Georgian air companies, Airzena and Air Georgia, with the carrier being named Airzena Georgian Airlines. Airzena had started in September 1994 operating charter flights. Headquartered in Tbilisi, the newly-formed Airzena Georgian Airlines was a private company, one of the largest in Georgia. In October 1994, the airline was named to Georgian Airways.
