A85 road
|
The A85 is a major road in Scotland. It runs east from Oban along the south bank of Loch Etive, through Lochawe and Tyndrum, Crianlarich, Lochearnhead, St Fillans and Crieff before terminating at Perth.
The A90 road from Perth to Dundee was previously a continuation of the A85, which now reemerges nearly 20 miles east to run through the city of Dundee.
Between Tyndrum and Crianlarich the road becomes the A82, where it merges with the main north-south road.
Some statistics (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/1824466.stm) seem to show that the A85 between Oban and Tyndrum is among the 10 most dangerous roads in Scotland. This may be because the road alternates between straight and wide parts, and narrow tight bends. Another contributory factor may be the mixture of fast, mainly local, traffic and slow, mainly tourist, traffic; also the exceptionally scenic nature of the surroundings may distract drivers.
