480 Super Redhawk
|
The .480 Super Redhawk is a double action 6 shot revolver manufactured by Sturm, Ruger, marketed primarily for the pistol hunting market. The stainless steel Super Redhawk is available in either 7.5 or 9.5 inch (191 or 241 mm) barrel lengths. It is chambered for .480 Ruger (.476 inch bullet), a shortened version of the proprietary .475 Linebaugh revolver cartridge.
Hornady is producing the ammunition with a 325 grain (21 g) XTP/ Mag jacketed hollow point The muzzle velocity listed by Hornady is 1350 feet per second (411 m/s) with the 325 grain (21 g) XTP/Mag bullet in a 7.5 in (191 mm) barrel model.
The .480 Super Redhawk was the largest handgun (by caliber) that used non-proprietary ammunition in production until Smith and Wesson introduced its .500 S&W, 50 caliber magnum revolver in 2003. (However, it was not the most powerful; the .454 Casull, developed in 1957 and commercialized in the 1990s, lies between the .480 Ruger and .500 S&W in power.)
