3C279 (aka 3C 279), a gamma-ray quasar, is one of the few known blazars in existence. It is located at a redshift (distance) of z=0.5362. The name signifies that it was the 279th object (ordered by right ascension) of the Third Cambridge Catalog of Radio Sources (3C), published in 1959.
