Petropavlovsk Fortress

The Petropavlovsk fortress (the fortress of Peter and Paul, named after Petropavlovsk cathedral) was founded on Zajachy Ostrov (Hare Island) in St._Petersburg, along with the city itself in 1703.

The fortress was never used for defence in a war but it is known for being a prison for political prisoners.
