Merseyside

Merseyside is a metropolitan county, created in the 1974 local government reform. It is in the north of England, on the River Mersey, composed of Liverpool City Council and the metropolitan borough councils of Knowsley, Sefton, St. Helen's and Wirral. In 1986 its county council was abolished, and so its boroughs are de facto unitary authorities, although Merseyside still exists legally, and as a ceremonial county.
