Marilyn Manson

Brian Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known as Marilyn Manson, is the lead singer of a Rock & Roll (but actually kind of industrial rock) band with the same name.

The members of the band dress up in bizarre and unconventional costuming, and have developed a devoted fan base by following and sometimes extending typical publicity/shock methodologies used by earlier shock groups like KISS and Alice Cooper. The band began in 1990, and, with the exception of Marilyn himself and keyboardist Madonna Wayne Gacy (also known as Pogo), has changed members several times since then. The names of the original band members were derived from the first name of a female pop culture icon and the last of a serial killer, though all members have been men. Marilyn's name refers to Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.

As a band, Marilyn Manson started in Tampa Bay, Florida under the name Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. Marilyn Manson's early presentation had a more comic-book, Scooby Doo-style than the dark, brooding feeling of the band's later output. The band didn't receive significant attention outside of Florida until after being noticed by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor. Marilyn Manson's first CD, Portrait of an American Family was released under Reznor's Nothing Records label.

Manson is dating/sharing his home with Dita von Teese (2002-).

People offended by Manson's lyrics accuse him of corrupting today's youth. In many American cities, protests and petitions have successfully had him banned from performing, much to the annoyance of his fans. After the Columbine High School massacre, many parents even stated that it was his music (along with that of other bands in the gothic/industrial genre) that influenced Harris and Klebold to kill. This despite statements by Harris and Klebold that they did not like Manson's music. In a recent Michael Moore film about the shooting, Bowling for Columbine, Moore interviewed Manson about the tragedy. Upon being asked what he would say to the two if he had a chance to talk to them before the killings, Manson replied calmly, "I wouldn't say anything; I would listen to them. No one ever listened to them."
