Sangerfield, New York

Sangerfield is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,610. The town is named after Jedediah Sanger, an early settler.

Geography

The south town line and the west town line are the border of Madison County, New York. US Route 20 crosses the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 80.2 km² (31.0 mi²). 79.8 km² (30.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

History

In 1788, the State of New York bought from the Oneida Indians twenty towns that bordered the Unadilla river. This land became known as "Clinton's Purchase". In 1789, the state surveyed "Township No. 20" in this tract for

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,610 people, 944 households, and 684 families residing in the town. The population density is 32.7/km² (84.7/mi²). There are 1,010 housing units at an average density of 12.7/km² (32.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.31% White, 0.38% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 944 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,264, and the median income for a family is $44,871. Males have a median income of $31,144 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,068. 9.7% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Pleasant Valley -- A hamlet west of Sangerfield village on Route 20.
  • Sangerfield -- The hamlet of Sangerfield is south of Waterwell and on US Route 20.
  • Stockville -- A hamlet in the south part of the town.
  • Waterville -- Part of the Village of Waterville is within the north town line.
