Cleveland, Tennessee

Cleveland is a city located in Bradley County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,192. It is the county seat of Bradley CountyTemplate:GR. Among its notable institutions are the Church of God (Cleveland) denomination and its affiliated school, Lee University.

It is named after Cleveland, England.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 64.6 km² (25.0 mi²). 64.6 km² (25.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 37,192 people, 15,037 households, and 9,518 families residing in the city. The population density is 575.5/km² (1,490.9/mi²). There are 16,431 housing units at an average density of 254.3/km² (658.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.00% White, 7.01% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,037 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,098, and the median income for a family is $40,150. Males have a median income of $30,763 versus $21,480 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,316. 16.1% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 14.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
