Cheatham County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 35,912. Its county seat is Ashland City6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 795 km² (307 mi²). 784 km² (303 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,912 people, 12,878 households, and 10,160 families residing in the county. The population density is 46/km² (119/mi²). There are 13,508 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (45/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.86% White, 1.48% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,878 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.90% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.10% are non-families. 16.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 33.50% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 8.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,836, and the median income for a family is $49,143. Males have a median income of $34,476 versus $25,191 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,882. 7.40% of the population and 5.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.60% of those under the age of 18 and 9.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
