Brownsville is a city located in Haywood County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,748. It is the county seat of Haywood CountyTemplate:GR.

The racial makeup of the city is 36.52% White, 60.72% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.83% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 3.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,105 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 27.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 27.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
