Avid Technology, Inc, created in 1987, and a publicly traded company since 1993, is registered on the NASDAQ under the symbol "AVID". The company is involved with digital nonlinear media creation(NLE), management and distribution services. Its headquarters is in Massachusetts in the United States.

In 1995, Digidesign (makers of Pro Tools) became a division of Avid. In August 2004, Avid acquired M-Audio, which is now a business unit of Digidesign.

Importance
Avid is the leading maker of digital media creation tools. In the late 80's, it began to replace such tools as the Moviola, allowing editors to handle their film creations with much more ease. All the editors had to go through the transition to "the Avid", besides some who refused, because these new Avid tools greatly increased efficency. Most television shows, features films, commercials, and any other similar media is created with an Avid. More recently, Avid has released home versions of their professional line of editors, such as their Xpress DV. They also released Avid Free DV to allow more people to familiarize themselves with the specific Avid editing style that is present in all their tools.
