Zones of Nepal

Nepal is divided into 5 development regions, which are divided into 14 zones, and these in turn are divided into 75 districts. Each district is divided into municipalities and Village Development Committees that are further divided into wards.

List of development regions, zones and districts

  • पुर्व / Purva / Eastern
    • Mechi (Districts: Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung)
    • Kosi (Districts: Morang, Sunsari, Dhankuta, Terahthum, Bhojpur, Sankhuwashabha)
    • Sagarmatha (Districts: Saptari, Siraha, Udayapur, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Solukhumbu)
  • मध्य / Madhya / Middle
    • Janakpur (Districts: Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Sindhuli, Ramechhap, Dolakha)
    • Bagmati (Districts: Kavre, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Dhadhing, Nuwakot, Sindhipalchowk, Rasuwa)
    • Narayani (Districts: Rautahut, Bara, Parsa, Makawanpur, Chitwan)
  • पश्चिम / Pašcim / Western
    • Gandaki (Districts: Gorkha, Tanahu, Syangjha, Lamjung, Kaski, Manang)
    • Lumbini (Districts: Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilbastu, Palpa, Argakhnachi, Gulmi)
    • Dhaulagiri (Districts: Parbat, Baglung, Myaghdi, Mustang)
  • मध्य पश्चिम / Madhya Pašcim / Mid-Western
    • Karnali (Districts: Dolpa, Jumla, Kalikot, Mugu, Humla)
    • Rapti (Districts: Dang, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Salyan, Rukum)
    • Bheri (Districts: Banke, Bardiya, Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot)
  • सुदुर पश्चिम / Sudur Pašcim / Far-Western
    • Seti (Districts: Kailali, Doti, Achham, Bajura, Bajhang)
    • Mahakali (Districts: Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Darchula)

There is a popular phrase in Nepali to remember the zones of Nepal: "MeRa BheNaKo BaKaSa Ma GaJaLU DhauSe."
