Zelienople is a borough located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 4,123.

Geography

Zelienople is located at 40°47'31" North, 80°8'28" West (40.791905, -80.141049)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.84% water.

History

Zelienople was named for the eldest daughter of Baron Demar Basse (1762-1836). Baron Basse purchased some 10,000 acres of property in the western side of Pennsylvania in 1802, planning the town and preparing to move Zelie and her younger brother to a new American home. At the time, Zelie was betrothed to Philipp Louis Passavant. Extensive preparations were made to establish their new home and town in America where they arrived in September 1807.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,123 people, 1,956 households, and 1,054 families residing in the borough. The population density is 747.4/km² (1,938.1/mi²). There are 2,113 housing units at an average density of 383.0/km² (993.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.91% White, 0.39% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,956 households out of which 22.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.1% are non-families. 41.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 25.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $40,250, and the median income for a family is $52,426. Males have a median income of $41,741 versus $31,083 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $23,555. 4.7% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
