Is known from the 13th century: first as a village Krasny, later as a town of Novogorodok-upon-Osetr. In those times Zaraysk was one of the fortresses, appearing as a part of the Great Abatis Border - a fortified line of felled trees, barricades, fortresses, ditches etc., which were build by Russians as a protection against the Mongolo-Tatars hordes.

Before entering the Moscow princedom Zaraysk was part of the Ryazan princedom. In the 19th century in was also a part of the Ryazan Region, and although in the soviet times it was transferred to the Moscow Region, the architectural style of buildings in Zaraysk and the dialect, used in this town, are both of Ryazan type.

In the 1531 a stone citadel (kremlin) was built on a place of the former wooden citadel. In the 1533, 1541 and 1570 the town was exposed to raids of Mongolo-Tatars, but the citadel was never captured. It also resisted attacks of the Lithuanians when in the beginning of the 17th century (during the Russian Time of Troubles) they laid sieges to Russian towns.
