Woodland, Washington

Woodland is a city located in Clark County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,780. Historically, Woodland is part of Cowlitz County, Washington and the majority of the city's citizens live in Cowlitz County as opposed to Clark County.

History

Woodland was officially incorporated on March 27, 1906.

Woodland is perhaps best known as the home of Hulda Klager (1863 - 1960), who was a prolific breeder of lilac hybrids. Her house and lilac gardens were saved in 1964 from being bulldozed to make an industrial site, and are currently maintained as a state and National Historic Landmark by the Hulda Klaeger Lilac Society.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.85% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,780 people, 1,379 households, and 979 families residing in the city. The population density is 581.5/km² (1,508.9/mi²). There are 1,482 housing units at an average density of 228.0/km² (591.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.36% White, 0.34% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 2.83% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 7.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,379 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,742, and the median income for a family is $44,483. Males have a median income of $37,321 versus $22,686 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,596. 10.8% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
