Wisner Township, Michigan

Wisner Township is a township located in Tuscola County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 749. The first land entries in this area were made by Joshua Terry in 1853, by Green Bird in 1854, and by Isaiah Jester in 1855. The township was first organized in 1861 and named after Moses Wisner, Governor of Michigan from 1859-1861. Henry H. Gilbert became the first postmaster on December 11, 1871, with the post office operating until May 31, 1905.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 66.4 km² (25.6 mi²). 50.2 km² (19.4 mi²) of it is land and 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.52% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 749 people, 309 households, and 231 families residing in the township. The population density is 14.9/km² (38.7/mi²). There are 368 housing units at an average density of 7.3/km² (19.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.20% White, 0.13% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 3.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 309 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the township the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 109.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $35,250, and the median income for a family is $47,625. Males have a median income of $39,375 versus $25,625 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,153. 13.0% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.6% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
