Winfield, New York

Winfield is a town in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,202. The town is named after General Winfield Scott.

The Town of Winfield is in the southwest corner of the county.

Geography

The south town line and part of the west town line are the border of Otsego County, New York. The remainder of the west town line is the border of Oneida County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 61.3 km² (23.6 mi²). 61.3 km² (23.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,202 people, 821 households, and 614 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.9/km² (93.1/mi²). There are 871 housing units at an average density of 14.2/km² (36.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.73% White, 0.14% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 821 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,588, and the median income for a family is $42,841. Males have a median income of $27,414 versus $21,667 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,809. 8.0% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
