Willy Wonka is a fictional character who owns a candy company in Roald Dahl's children's books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. A musical film adaptation of Dahl's classic, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Mel Stuart and starring Gene Wilder was released in 1971. Another version of the tale, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, will be released in 2005. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was originally a box office flop but today is seen as a cult classic.
The Willy Wonka Candy Company
The Willy Wonka Candy Company is the name of a brand of candy in the United States owned by the Nestlé company using licensed materials from the Roald Dahl books for their packaging and marketing. A cartoon version of Willy Wonka appears on the products and in their advertising as its mascot. The brand started in 1971, when the Chicago candy company Breaker Confections licensed the Willy Wonka name so it could be used as a merchandizing tie-in for the movie. In 1980, Breaker Confections changed its name to Willy Wonka Brands. Nestlé then bought the company in 1988.
Products
Naturally, many of the company's product names homage counterparts in the Dahl books. However, some lines like Pixy Stix and SweeTarts have been around for much longer.
