Willowbrook, California

Willowbrook is a census-designated place located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 34,138.

Willowbrook is best known as the home of Charles Drew University, a medical college that operates the troubled Martin Luther King, Jr. public hospital for the county of Los Angeles.

Geography

Willowbrook is located at 33°55'3" North, 118°15'10" West (33.917515, -118.252705)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 34,138 people, 8,476 households, and 6,823 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 3,524.3/km² (9,121.6/mi²). There are 9,042 housing units at an average density of 933.5/km² (2,416.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 16.06% White, 44.91% African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 34.98% from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. 53.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,476 households out of which 47.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 29.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.5% are non-families. 16.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.97 and the average family size is 4.35.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 37.3% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $27,811, and the median income for a family is $30,107. Males have a median income of $22,250 versus $23,615 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,865. 30.7% of the population and 26.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
