Wilcox County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Lieutenant J. M. Wilcox, who fought in the wars against the Creek Indians. As of 2000 the population was 13,183. Its county seat is Camden.

History

Wilcox County was established on December 13, 1819.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,350 km² (907 mi²). 2,302 km² (889 mi²) of it is land and 49 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,183 people, 4,776 households, and 3,376 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 6,183 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 27.51% White, 71.90% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,776 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.80% are married couples living together, 26.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.31.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.70% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 87.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $16,646, and the median income for a family is $22,200. Males have a median income of $26,216 versus $17,274 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,903. 39.90% of the population and 36.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 48.40% of those under the age of 18 and 32.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
