Wheatfield, New York

Wheatfield is a town located in Niagara County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,086.

The Town of Wheatfield is in the southwest part of the county. On the south border is the City of North Tonawanda. The City of Niagara Falls touches the northwest border.

History

The Town of Wheatfield was established in 1836 from the Town of Niagara. Wheatfield was the last town formed in the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 74.1 km² (28.6 mi²). 72.3 km² (27.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.41% water.

The Niagara River is part of the western border of the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,086 people, 5,305 households, and 3,893 families residing in the town. The population density is 194.9/km² (504.6/mi²). There are 5,555 housing units at an average density of 76.8/km² (199.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.44% White, 0.99% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,305 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $51,700, and the median income for a family is $61,315. Males have a median income of $42,076 versus $27,233 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,184. 4.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Bergholz -- A hamlet in the northwestern part of the town near the airport.
  • Hoffman -- A location on the eastern border of the town.
  • Nashville -- A location on Route 62 in the southeast part of the town.
  • Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) -- Part of the airport is in the northern part of the town.
  • Sawyer -- A hamlet on Route 62 adjacent to the City of North Tonawanda.
  • Shawnee -- A hamlet on Route 62 (Niagara Falls Boulevard).
  • St. Johnsburg -- A hamlet on Route 62 near the center of the town.
  • Walmore -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town on Lockport Road.
