Westlake Village is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,368. It is often confused with the Los Angeles district of Westlake.

Westlake Village is a planned community built around a manmade lake straddling the Los Angeles-Ventura county line. Construction began in 1966, and the city incorporated in 1981. Much of the original community is actually in the city of Thousand Oaks in Ventura County, and the population and land area figures quoted below apply only to the Los Angeles County portions of the city.

The city is known for its affluence and secluded character, and is one of the wealthiest communities in Greater Los Angeles. In addition to its role as a bedroom community for Los Angeles via the Ventura Freeway, it is also home to many large commercial offices and the headquarters of the Dole Food Company and Guitar Center.

Geography

Westlake Village is located at 34°8'31" North, 118°49'10" West (34.141973, -118.819514)Template:GR. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.95% water. The village is located approximately 40 miles north of Los Angeles in the Conejo Valley. Other cities in the surrounding area include Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Agoura, Calabasas, and Newbury Park.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,368 people, 3,270 households, and 2,491 families residing in the city. The population density is 620.1/km² (1,605.9/mi²). There are 3,347 housing units at an average density of 248.0/km² (642.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.70% White, 0.82% African American, 0.13% Native American, 6.08% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 4.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,270 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $94,571, and the median income for a family is $109,310. Males have a median income of $88,179 versus $38,568 for females. The per capita income for the city is $49,596. 2.5% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
