West Winfield, New York

West Winfield is a village located in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 862. The village is named after General Winfield Scott.

Geography

West Winfield is located at 42°53'4" North, 75°11'31" West (42.884521, -75.191836)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 862 people, 352 households, and 241 families residing in the village. The population density is 369.8/km² (959.3/mi²). There are 372 housing units at an average density of 159.6/km² (414.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.65% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 352 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the village the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $33,947, and the median income for a family is $42,031. Males have a median income of $26,793 versus $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,465. 9.1% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
