West Monroe, New York

West Monroe is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,428.

The Town of West Monroe is in the southeast part of the county.

Geography

Part of the south town line is on the opposite shore of Oneida Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.8 km² (38.5 mi²). 87.3 km² (33.7 mi²) of it is land and 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,428 people, 1,579 households, and 1,206 families residing in the town. The population density is 50.7/km² (131.3/mi²). There are 1,765 housing units at an average density of 20.2/km² (52.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.38% White, 0.14% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 0.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,579 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 108.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,043, and the median income for a family is $47,019. Males have a median income of $34,306 versus $25,489 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,534. 11.8% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
