Webb, New York

Webb is a town located in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,912.

The Town of Webb is the northernmost town in the county and was formed from the (now defunct) Town of Wilmurt. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad traverses the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1,250.8 km² (482.9 mi²), making it the largest town geographically in the state of New York.. 1,168.1 km² (451.0 mi²) of it is land and 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.61% water.

Webb is in the Adirondack State Park. One end of the Fulton Chain Lakes is located in the town.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,912 people, 845 households, and 534 families residing in the town. The population density is 1.6/km² (4.2/mi²). There are 3,833 housing units at an average density of 3.3/km² (8.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.96% White, 0.68% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 845 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.72.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,541, and the median income for a family is $43,516. Males have a median income of $30,906 versus $20,398 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,910. 8.8% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

• Fourth Lake -- A large lake shared with Hamilton County, New York. Fourth Lake is actually the last part of a larger lake with each section having an ordinal designation.

• Little Rapids -- A location at the east end of the Stillwater Reservoir.
• McKeever -- A hamlet on Route 28 at the western town border.

• Old Forge -- A hamlet on Route 28. Old Forge often records the lowest winter temperatures in New York. Old Forge is the principal community in the region.

• Stillwater Reservoir -- A large lake in the northern part of the town.
