Wayland (village), New York

Wayland is a village located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,893.

The Village of Wayland is in the Town of Wayland at the junction of Routes 15 and 63. The village is in the north part of the town.

History

The village was incorporated in 1877. The village grew after is was selected as a station on the Erie Railroad.

Geography

Wayland is located at 42°34'5" North, 77°35'30" West (42.568131, -77.591854)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Wayland is in the northwestern part of the county, near the border of Livingston County, New York and just north of Interstate 86.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,893 people, 743 households, and 502 families residing in the village. The population density is 709.6/km² (1,831.3/mi²). There are 808 housing units at an average density of 302.9/km² (781.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.36% White, 1.11% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 743 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the village the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $40,598, and the median income for a family is $44,401. Males have a median income of $32,240 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,316. 7.8% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
