Waverly, Ohio

Waverly is a city located in, and the county seat of Pike County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,433. The town was formed in 1829, as the construction of the Ohio-Erie Canal along the west bank of the Scioto River brought new growth to the area. In 1861 the county seat was moved here from Piketon.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,433 people, 2,028 households, and 1,237 families residing in the city. The population density is 436.6/km² (1,131.3/mi²). There are 2,219 housing units at an average density of 218.6/km² (566.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.75% White, 1.15% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,028 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 35.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.76.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,895, and the median income for a family is $41,346. Males have a median income of $38,045 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,554. 12.2% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.9% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.
